Driving home steamed up in traffic people trapped dissatisfied change but no progress I slam on the brakes careen into silence and escape finding myself thinking about love under a Fourth of July sky like a romance novel smoke massing overhead hearts ready to fire synchronized with the finale of a thousand fireworks a mesmerizing entrancing moment of recovery after a frazzling day and I told myself I said don’t lose the softness of your heart don’t let your life become hardened stained under constant stress don’t lose your most sensuous expressive self no one can ever take that from you unless you let that happen and then the car in back of me flipped me off and I looked at them and I took a big bite out of a peach that I didn’t eat for lunch and let the juice just drip down my chin and no I didn’t have any napkins.
